Believer in the rigorous science of beltology and master of the arcane arts of menswear, this current research project stands as a whimsical odyssey to get down to the bottom of the age-old question: What side does a man’s belt buckle go on? Ah, the belt. Humble servant to trousers, steadfast guardian of dignity, silent witness to the ebb and flow of fashion, testimony to the ever-increasing circumference of holiday feasting.
Above all, to speak of the ideal position for the buckle on a belt smacks of irrelevance in the grand tapestry of sartorial traditions. No, my dear friend, this is the canvas on which the subtle shades of culture, tradition, and personal idiosyncrasies are painted. To the uninitiated, it seems a very simple device for keeping one’s pants aloft; however, to those of us in the know, it makes a profound statement of style, identity, and sometimes just plain practicality.
Convention in the Western world dictates that the belt should be threaded through the loops in such a manner that when put on, the buckle sits on the left side of the man. As rich in history and as much part of the male wardrobe existence inexplicably, the pocket square tradition—or like the little button on polo shirts, whose purpose is hard to pin down. But then you would ask, why does such a tradition exist? To answer that, one would really have to reach way back in the day when a sword was the iPhone of the time—everyone had one, and you just weren’t cool unless it was bigger than the next guy’s.
Indeed, the natural right-handed would draw their sword from the left, therefore avoiding any awkwardness that could come from entangling the weapon either in a belt or, heaven forbid, his trousers. With the buckle always on the left side, drawing the sword would be smooth, not at all interrupted, whether it be the business of life and death in those days—or at least a question of who would win the argument over who had the best horse.
Fast forward to modern times, and the only thing we duel with is our wits, and the most dangerous thing we carry is probably a smartphone with a cracked screen. And yet, the tradition still lives on, unspoken homage to our swashbuckling forefathers. But let’s not restrict ourselves to tradition, for in fashion, rules are guidelines which will just be considered as whispered suggestions to be heeded or flouted at your whim.
Some even thread their belt, buckle on the right, as a silent protest against conformity; sartorial rebellion saying, “Look at me, I’m the master of my beltway!” And to those brave souls, I say, bravo! For fashion, like life, is a journey that can very much take one down the road less traveled, and with that being said, sometimes that road opens up to new opportunities in one’s life that would not normally be presented with the choosing of a more traditional path. What manliness is and where it resides is a question that has been answered in so many ways it might be different.

So, buckle up, dear reader, for in the grand adventure of style, you are the captain of your destiny.
